Governments at all levels have recognized the importance of the marine debris issue by creating policies, laws, and regulations to address it. While some legislation may still be proposed or in process, this site provides a list of finalized legislative documents related to marine debris.
Effective July 1, 2018, a working group comprised of apparel industry and environmental professionals will be formed to evaluate the impacts of synthetic microfibers. Partners will develop best practises to reduce shedding, eliminate microfibers, and educate consumers.
On May 22, 2018, Rockport joined more than 70 other Massachusetts municipalities when the Rockport Board of Health voted to ban smoking on all six public beaches.
Effective January 1, 2019, Gloucester, MA will prohibit the distribution of single-use plastic check out bags.
